The Story Of A Website

I’m good at what I do.

I know. What a big head. Such conceit. Who does he think he is?

And fair enough. We live in a society where it’s not exactly fashionable to, as the old saying goes, ‘blow your own trumpet’.

But if you won’t then who will?

In any industry where you work as a Freelancer, you need to have, in my opinion, three essential qualities, three aspects of your character and personality which are as good as bulletproof.

You need vision.

You need imagination.

You need self confidence.

However, you also need to know when you need to ask for help from someone else. Which is what I eventually knew I had to do when it came to updating my website, something which I had been intending to do from the beginning of 2022 but, for whatever reasons (normally putting the needs of others before those of my own-but aren’t we all guilty of that?) kept putting off until that June.

I also didn’t want to work with someone who would focus on giving me what they thought I needed rather than someone who would empathise with my own ideas and work with me on those. Which is exactly what Chris Reeve and Digital Boss offered when I first mentioned my requirements to them way back in 2019.

Chris, for those of you who don’t yet know him, has that happy knack of making you, as a customer, feel important. Its a fast disappearing act now in a world where, for the most part, we, as customers and consumers are increasingly expected to be happy with whatever service we are provided, no matter how questionable its quality or cost. Not so with Digital Boss. Right from the start, this was about what I wanted, what my vision was and how I wanted them to portray it.

Once I’d got over the shock, I realised, with no little pleasure, that they’d given me a blank canvas to play with. I could pretty much have what I wanted, it was just a case of letting them know exactly what that was and going from there.

An approach that reminded me of the classic conundrum I remember so well from Art lessons in school when the teacher would start the session by saying words to the effect of, “today you can draw and paint whatever you like”.

Which was all well and good. Except that it would usually leave 20-25 people staring at the blank piece of paper in front of them for an hour or so and not having a clue what they wanted to put on it. Not so far removed from my work today, and, as a specific example, the blogging service which I provide for a number of clients across the UK.

Their businesses and areas of work can be very specific, even within their own industry. One client, for example, manufactured and sold hand stitched corsets. Which meant my weekly brief was to plan and write 500 words about corsets and the corsetry industry.

Which was great. Because I knew exactly what they wanted every week. I enjoyed planning and writing the blogs and got some excellent feedback in terms of comments as did the company in question who were pleased at the number of visits and hits their website was getting, courtesy of my blog.

And that’s what a blog is for by the way. To generate an interest in what you do and, as a business, have to offer. Meaning regular visits by potential customers and, in time, sales that you might not have had if you hadn’t put yourself ‘out there’ in a blog. As simple as that. Get in touch if that prospect appeals to you and lets talk about your business.

This wasn’t a blank brief. It was very specific. But it made it very easy to do. Its not so easy to think of what you want when you genuinely have as much creative freedom to design and write something as you possibly can.

The ideas came to me though. They always do. And, to my utter delight, Chris and Elliot from Digital Boss translated them into exactly what I was looking for. My needs, not theirs. My vision, not theirs.

My work. Their creativity.

I’m delighted at the end result which you are, of course, visiting at this very moment.

I’m very glad that I trusted them with the vision I had of what my new website looked like. It’s not always easy, at least for me, to let others run with my ideas, especially when my work is about my imagination and creativity, not someone else’s.

But sometimes you’ve got to admit that someone else can do a better job than you can.

And in the case of web design and digital marketing, I can’t think of anyone better to do that, for me or you that Digital Boss in Norwich.

But don’t just take my word for it. Give them a call. Mention my name if you like.

And enjoy the experience!Blogging
